Jane Murphy was born in Island in 1865.

Jane’s baptism date was recorded as 26 Mar 1965. Her baptismal sponsors were John and Anne Cullinan.

Like several members of her generation, Jane left Ireland for North America, arriving during the late nineteenth century (with emigration records noting various arrival milestones spanning from 1878 to 1888).

On 24 January 1896, Jane married Oscar Smith (1863–1924) in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. Over the following years, the couple settled in Newark Ward 7, where Oscar worked and Jane managed the household, raising a family that included sons Frank, Oscar, Bernard, and William.

Following the death of her husband Oscar in November 1924, Jane continued to reside in Newark, appearing as a widowed head of household in subsequent census records. Jane F. Smith passed away on 16 February 1951 at the age of 86 and was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey.
